So the evening before last my mum told me we were going out for dinner at this chinese restaurant.
And as i was making myself vaguely presentable for public i tried to envision just the three of us - me, my sister plus my mum- sitting in a chinese restaurant.
Then i realized; i have never seen a group of less than 4-5 people sitting at a table in an authentic cina restaurant. i don't mean Da Bien at 506th Avenue or whatever, i mean those real chinese restaurants where the aircon is set to -10, where the waiters have a uniform comprising of dress shirt, dress pants/skirt and 90% of the time, a vest.
Chinese restaurants that have red or off-white table cloths with a spinning platform on the middle of the table, and nuts are served as the appetizer whether you order them or not. (you don't. the nuts are always on the table first.)
I tried to imagine a random family of three at such an aforementioned restaurant...

But then in my mind's eye suddenly grandmothers, uncles and assorted relatives and friends misted into existence.
Huh.
And when there are groups of 3 in a cina restaurant, it always consists of entirely adults. No kids. Even tonight, with two kids and a grown up, we met a male grown up and he sat with us- thus preserving the status quo. It's like it's some kind of law.
I would like to end this post by requesting you; my dear readers, to post any pictures of any exceptions to the rule. In other words, if you see any group in a chinese restaurant that goes against what i've said here, i'd really like to see it. Pictures or it didn't happen.
